Ohio Spiderwort

Flowers and stems can be eaten raw, while the leaves can be cooked. Leaves of the plant are mucilaginous and can be used to soothe insect bites in a similar way to aloe vera. The delicate, violet hairs on the plant's stamens are highly sensitive to radiation, mutating from blue to pink when exposed. For this reason, the plant has been used historically by researchers as a natural environmental monitor for radiation.
